HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has begun allowing new digital customers to register for its services using GOV.UK One Login. This new sign-in option, launched from 9 February, enables individuals without an existing Government Gateway account to create credentials using only an email address and password, rather than the traditional multi-digit ID.
This move marks a significant step in the government’s aim to streamline access to more than 200 public services, ultimately replacing multiple sign-ins with a single, secure login system.
Introduction of GOV.UK One Login
GOV.UK One Login is designed as the central point of access for a broad range of government services. Users can sign in securely to services related to tax, passports, and voter registration, among others.
The ambition is to provide a simplified, consistent experience across government digital platforms. By enabling the new system for HMRC, the overall number of services accessible through GOV.UK One Login expands substantially.
Changes for New HMRC Customers
From 9 February, individuals registering for HMRC digital services for the first time will use GOV.UK One Login, relying on an email address and password instead of a Government Gateway ID.
This update is intended to make the onboarding process more straightforward and user-friendly for new customers. The transition is being closely monitored, with the full implementation set to proceed gradually.
Impact on Existing Government Gateway Users
Current HMRC customers with a Government Gateway account are unaffected for now. They should continue to use their existing credentials to access HMRC services.
Those who already use GOV.UK One Login for other government services will still need to log in to HMRC with their Government Gateway ID. HMRC will contact existing users directly when it is time to transition to the new login system.
Wider Rollout Across Government
The government’s wider digital transformation strategy includes the expansion of GOV.UK One Login to all online services. When fully deployed, it will allow individuals to use a single sign-in across services managed by various departments.
The addition of HMRC brings the number of services accessible via GOV.UK One Login to over 200, supporting the goal of joined-up, efficient digital government.
Security and User Support
HMRC emphasises that customer security and service reliability remain central priorities. Suzanne Newton, HMRC’s Director General for Change Delivery Group, said the update will help make public service interactions 'simpler and quicker for customers … while maintaining the security and reliability they expect.'
Support is available through the Government Digital Service for those needing assistance setting up or using GOV.UK One Login.
Final Summary
The introduction of GOV.UK One Login for HMRC's new customers represents a pivotal move towards unified digital access across government services. New users can now benefit from a streamlined registration process and will eventually use a single sign-on for a wide range of public services.
Existing Government Gateway account holders will transition at a later stage and should continue to use their current credentials in the interim. As the digital transformation continues, additional support remains available for those who need it.
